Countdown: 66 days

In 66 days, I will be starting the 3-year marathon that is law school.  As anyone would before running a real marathon, I’ve been training for this sucker so that I can do what everyone says you should do your first year:

“Hit the ground running.”

Law school (to me, at least) is serious business—there is no way I’m going to take out a $100,000+ loan to slack off and fall behind in my classes.  Neither is slacking off a good way to jump start a career, which is essentially, what I’m after—a challenging and fulfilling career that at the same time will pay off my student loans before retirement age, and will provide a comfortable life for my (future) family.

Those of you who know me well might be thinking, “What? Genie Moon slacks?” No.  I don’t slack.  I’m not a slacker, I never was, and I don’t have a single slacking-off bone in my body.  But contrary to popular thought and high school legend, neither have I ever been at the top of my class—indeed, I might have been “Miss Gold Stars After Her Name Because She Is A Star,” but that never got me a title as valedictorian or even the coveted University of California Regent’s scholarship.  Rather, I went to college on a merit scholarship meaning “I might not be that smart, but at least I try hard.”

And so it is with law school—I tried hard but I wasn’t that smart so my LSAT score got me into a strong regional school and not into nation’s Top 14.

Anyhow, thus begins Genie in Japan‘s transition from being an “expat blog” to a “law blog.”  In the coming weeks, I hope to document

  • why I decided to go to law school,
  • how I studied for the LSATs,
  • how I applied to schools,
  • how I’m preparing during 0L summer,
  • and the realities of law school concerning finances, commuting, studying, a long-distance relationship, the job market, being a female law student/lawyer, being Asian-American, etc.

I hope this blawg (law + blog) will become a source for candid and useful information for future law students and/or friends & family of law students who are trying to understand what has become of their law school-attending friend/sister/cousin/daughter/wife.
